Opening of National Chapter of Transparency International
2004/11/10
Mrs. H.Naranjargal, head of Globe International attended a Press Conference due to opening of National Chapter of Transparency International held on 4th November 2004 at Press Institute. Globe International is one of the founders of TI chapter in Mongolia.
- We have been working on freedoms of information and media freedom over the last years. The public's right to know is an essential part in combating corruption. People with out information cannot be powerful and they do not know how the Government functions in the reality. Information hold by public organizations should be open to the public so that is why we are trying to make the Government and its institutions as more transparent as possible. Unfortunately, Mongolia is still missing a law guaranteeing public's right to access information. As a result of our previous activities we have drafted a law on Freedom of Information involving civil society groups and the Ministry of Justice and Home Affairs has formed its working group. FOI is part of National Anti-Corruption Programme, Human Right Programme and Good Governance Programme- said H.Naranjargal.
She also noted on role of free and media in combating corruption. According to the recent survey conducted among 200 journalists actively working in the news and current affairs 100% respondents said they have self-censorship. It is dangerous tendency. Media is an effective tool to raise public awareness and public education on anti-corruption issues and investigative reporters play a significant role in exposing corruption facts and cases.
