Discussion on free expression violations

One of 2 inter-related activities of the project to build the capacity of free-expression monitoring in Mongolia was to provide legal assistance for journalists. Mongolian journalists lack legal knowledge concerning how to exercise their professional duties and defend their rights. In 1999, Globe International organized a workshop for Mongolian lawyers on media freedom issues, providing training for some lawyers with support from MFOS. Some of this lawyers who have involved on the training have specialized on media freedom issues and still working in close contact with GI. Continuing our work in this important area, GI hired a lawyer who will provide regular legal consultancy for journalists through individual meetings and via the Internet, as well as take legal action concerning certain free-expression violations. A lawyer from Russia who was involved in the previous training, Galina Arapova, has come to Mongolia to provide skills training for the Mongolian lawyer in legal aspects of free-expression issues and successful defense of human rights.

On 22 December 2005 GI has initiated the law consultancy meeting among Mongolian lawyers with a participation of Ms.Galina Arapova.
