MONGOLIAN PRESS INSTITUTE IS CELEBRATING 10th ANNIVERSARY

The Press Institute was established in 1995 under a project “Free media”, which was funded by Danish International Development Agency in accordance with the bilateral agreement between Mongolia and Denmark. The Institute is a non-governmental organization designed to serve the interests of a civil society.

Over the past 10 years the institute has made a significant contribution to the development of democratic media in Mongolia through undertaking a wide variety of activities, such as courses involving journalists, staff of both governmental and non-governmental organizations and etc,as well as research work and media services.

During this period the institute has implemented over 40 research projects. Among the ongoing research projects are monitoring mass media in Mongolia and research on consumers’ behavior on the media market. The material related to these two research topics appears yearly in the world-famous journal issued by the World Association of Newspapers.

Furthermore, over 180 people have attended courses on journalism offered by the institute. More importantly, two years ago the institute founded a college specializing in journalism.
On the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the Press Institute of Mongolia, “Globe International interviewed the following people.

Munhmandah, Executive director of the Press Institute:

Whereas the Press Institute has primarily been engaged in conducting surveys, it is now planning to proceed to conducting quality research. There has recently been a lot of talk about media being biased, irresponsible and inept. However, there is no evidence yet to back this talk.

Therefore, from this year on we are planning to conduct research on the policy pursued by those who are engaged in preparing daily news, articles and programs.

G. Gunjidmaa, head of Information Research Section of the Press Institute:

Every month, upon receiving the relevant orders from various media groups and businesses, we conduct research on consumers’ and audience’s behavior. Sh. Selenge, Marketing Director of MCS Group spoke on this specific type of research: “Our marketing experts order such research with a view to consolidating the forecasts they come up with. The research conducted by the institute has not yet reached a point where it has a considerable impact on the decision–making process at our company”. The comments of G. Bulgan, desk officer responsible for advertising and public relations at Anod bank, were as follows: “It is while undertaking advertising planning monthly, when Anod bank uses this research. It needs to be underlined that the Press institute conducts the research on a professional level and without any interruptions”.
