During the reported period, we worked in partnership and cooperation with the Mongolian National Public Radio (MNPR) and Radio and Television Network Department (RTVND). Globe International has launched its own project titled Community Radio and it has formed the project team consisted from three persons: leader, coordinator and training manager.
During the project period, we organised several working meetings with the partners to define the terminology of community radio in Mongolian, coordinate the activities, develop the training programs and discuss the project progress and outcomes of the activities. We also organised the joint trip of the project partners to meet the community stakeholders and total of 536 citizens gained the knowledge on community radio and importance of their active community participation to the process of its establishment, Globe International in cooperation with the MNPR assisted in composition of Councils and appointment of radio managers. In total, 199 Council members, staff and volunteers participated in four trainings: training of trainers, training for the Council, staff and volunteers at soums and journalism trainings in Uvs, Bayan-Olgii and Khuvsgul aimag centers, and the in-house trainings organised during the review trip to each targeted soum. In total 44 individuals contributed to the design and curricula development of trainings and baseline surveys among citizens as trainers, data gatherers and consultants/experts as well as development draft bylaws and other supplementary documents for community radios. In total, 20 educational materials, manuals, handbooks and fliers as well as audios and videos distributed to the radios.
Community radios set up in 10 soums and started airing. The assessment on the operations of the community radios have been taken by the review trip team. It tells that successes are different in the soums. The main problem faced by some radios was a temporary stop of the operations because the premises had no heating during the cold winter. However, due to date of the final report submission activities of all the radios are normalized and the air time ranges from six to 12 hours a day. The results of the survey conducted among the more than 430 citizens show that 88.8 percent of the respondents know there is community radio in the soum and 82.4 percent of them listen to the radio. 69% listen to the radio on the mobile phones and music player.
